Chapter 22

Raven drags me into the forest, but I shove against her arms, trying to break her grip.

“We have to help her!”

Raven stops fighting me and turns to face me, gripping my arms. “We can’t fight them. She gave herself up for us, and I’m not about to waste her sacrifice by getting captured and having her sacrifice be for nothing.”

I nod. “You’re right.”

Aspen is on his toes, looking through the trees, his eyes scanning the terrain, wide with fear. “Emily never said anything about my uncle. I hope he is okay.”

“We are running now.” Raven doesn’t answer and runs off, forcing us to follow after her.

Aspen keeps casting glances over his shoulder.

This time I want to be ready for an attack. I use my mind to float palm leaves, sticks and small rocks, levitated around us ready for action. In the corner of my eye, Maya clutches her water bottle close.

“No need,” Raven pants. “If anyone tries to sneak up on us through the shadows, I’ll know.”

We both drop our weapons and focus on our running, running through the forest as fast as our legs can carry us. Maya runs into the lead since she is the only one who knows where we’re going, though it is dark and all we have is moonlight to guide us. Good thing it is a full moon.

Raven stops. I crash into her. Aspen grabs my shoulder to keep us all standing.

“Thanks.”

A smile pulls up at the corner of his mouth, “Anytime.”

“We’re being followed,” Raven whispers. The shadows pull tighter around us, cloaking us in a dark veil.

I listen closely. I can make out the sound of someone crashing through the forest after us.

Maya glances back over her shoulder, realizing we are no longer following. Her foot slips, sending her down to the ground with a cry.

“Maya!” I scream.

Raven slaps a hand over my mouth. I fight her hand away and dash to where Maya lays crumbled on the ground, her foot caught in a hole.

I skid to a halt, dropping to my knees, the sticks stabbing into my skin, “Are you okay?!”

Her face is streaked with tears, and she is biting her lip to keep from crying out. She shakes her head, grimacing.

“It sounds like they’re getting closer!” Raven runs over, the shadows drawing closer around us.

I quickly gather my projectiles, and Raven glares at the shadows, daring someone to jump out at us.

Two figures rush out of the shadows. Thin tendrils of shadow shoot out and encircle them, throwing them to the ground.

I gasp. I thought that shadows were a type of air or something, not solid. But Raven knows otherwise.

A strong gust of wind knocks me to the ground. I crash onto a running path, a sharp stick pokes me in the back. The shadows glow with an orange glow, fire.

“It’s us!” Alex’s muffled voice says.

We unknowingly captured Lucas and Alex, not fugitives. Raven must’ve come to the same conclusion because she let them go. Well. That is embarrassing.

Raven gets up, dusting the dirt off her black distressed jeans.
